Moșu’s saffron

The red gold in Moșu’s garden

Besides flowers and vegetables, Moșu grows saffron — the world’s most expensive spice. Each violet flower gives just three red threads, picked by hand at dawn. A single gram takes about 150 flowers.

La Mosu-n Retezat gives you a Romania-meets-Tuscany vibe: a courtyard full of colourful flowers, a lemon tree in one corner, a gorgeous peacock, a terrace covered in roses, a vegetable garden — a perfect place to relax after hiking in Retezat.

First of all, the moment we walked into the courtyard we were welcomed with great warmth and a very good blueberry liqueur from the host. […] exceptional hosts, ready to help with anything we needed — we even got advice on the trail we were about to hike in Retezat.

What stayed with me the most was the sense of inner peace I felt relaxing on the terrace after a full day, surrounded by flowers, just soaking in the silence—only crickets, night birds, and maybe a distant dog now and then […] and not to mention the beautiful display of stars in the sky.

This is already our fourth visit in the last four years. The place is superb — the rooms as well as the courtyard full of flowers, the garden, the terraces and the kitchen.
